About us

Awakening is a registered charitable trust working for the disabled persons. Awakening has been steadily working towards developing comprehensive rehabilitation opportunities for the persons with disabilities so as to facilitate integration into the mainstream of the society.

The Beginning…

There are some people whose abilities are limited in certain areas like hearing, vision, locomotion or intelligence; that we call people with disabilities. They were thought to be dependent on others for all their life.

The recent developments and research in brain science has made a paradigm shift in this view. It is now understood that we can develop some of the skills in these persons through special education and training. During the special education and the vocational training of children with special needs, the focus remains on the rehabilitation of these persons utilising their skills of art and craft.

However, after the training is over, question of finding some gainful employment remains.

Shamin Shere, M.A., B.Ed. Sp. Ed., who was working as Principal of Aavishkar’s Savita Kamat Vidyamandir at Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, INDIA, for over 32 years, found this question needed more attention. After undergoing training in ‘Transition from School to Work’ at National Institute of Mentally Handicapped, Secunderabad, she started working on the idea of vocational training starting early in the school years. The results of such early vocational training were amazing. The skills in these persons developed so well that they were enough to earn a living.

Dr. Shashvat Shere, Consultant psychiatrist with special interest in Child and Adolescence mental health and who was also the Founder Secretery of Aavishkar Society For Development of mentally handicapped believed in this concept of early voational training for rehabilitation.

Smt. Vanita Paranjape, an entrepreneur and grandmother of a child with special needs, had an experience of working with persons having disabilities at her company named Quality Service.

All these persons joined hands to develop a new model of rehabilitation to give opportunities of employement for the persons with disabilities.

On 31st October 2017, they formed a voluntary organization named

Awakening Charitable Trust with the main objective of rehabilitation of persons with all types of disabilities.
